Cougars roar on defense

NEGAUNEE — Superior Central put up some impressive shooting numbers to win the Class D regional boys basketball title at Negaunee High School Wednesday night. But Cougars head coach Cary Chartier was more impressed with the tightrope his team walked while playing defense in their 66-52 victory over Bark River-Harris. Superior Central, which improved to 22-3, advances to the Class D quarterfinals on Tuesday night in Escanaba against Cedarville (20-5), which defeated Harbor Springs Harbor Light 63-55 Wednesday. At stake in that game is a berth in the state semifinals at Michigan State University next Thursday night. On Wednesday, the Cougars made seven 3-pointers, five of them coming in the first half when SC ran up a 38-25 lead by halftime. But just as important in building that lead was a harassing, pressure-filled defense that worked mainly by making BR-H ball handlers look bad.
